Lyrics

When I was a young boy, they kept asking me
Have you, thought about, what you want to be?
Work hard, do what you're told, and you will get ahead
And try to have a little fun, before you wind up dead

But they never told me why.
What's the purpose of this life?

There's gotta be more, than what my eyes can see
There's gotta be more, who am I supposed to be
There's gotta be more, when I close my eyes
There's gotta be more, beyond this fragile life
There's gotta be more! (2x)

Staring up at the stars, and feelin' oh so small
That all of this is by chance, makes no sense at all
Chaos is my birth, they keep telling me
But even in the “simple” things there is complexity

But they never told me why.
What's the purpose of this life?

There's gotta be more, than what my eyes can see
There's gotta be more, who am I supposed to be
There's gotta be more, when I close my eyes
There's gotta be more, beyond this fragile life
There's gotta be more! (2x)

If everything has a purpose, then so do I
If everything has a purpose, then so do I

There's gotta be more! (2x)

About This Song

It seems cruel that such sentient creatures as us, capable of such great emotional, intelligent, and artistic feats, exist for such a brief time. All our love, dreams, passion: here today then gone tomorrow. There has to be more to this, right?

The order and complexity in the natural world around us seem to point to something bigger. New high powered microscopes reveal cities of organized activity in what we thought were simple cells. It is hard to believe that this all could come from random chance.

We all want our lives to matter and to have existed for a reason. What is the purpose of this life? Why am I here? Why do I feel like there is way more than what my eyes can see?

"For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago." - Ephesians 2:10
